Newcastle United are closing in on their third signing of the January transfer window as they are set to discuss personal terms with Bayer Leverkusen left-back Mitchel Bakker.

The 21-year-old has had an eventful career so far, coming through the ranks at Ajax and making his debut for the club in 2018 before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2019.

He made 45 appearances for PSG before moving to Leverkusen last summer and he has made 13 Bundesliga appearances so far this season.

Bakker, who has been capped up to under-21 level by the Netherlands, may now be on the move again, with the Telegraph reporting that Newcastle are ‘set to discuss personal terms’ with the Dutchman.

The Sun report that the deal will be worth around £14.5m, which would see the German side make a quick profit on him, having only signed him for £8.5m from PSG last year.

The Magpies have already brought in Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid and Chris Wood from Burnley as they battle against relegation from the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s side picked up an encouraging win at Leeds United on Saturday to make it three games unbeaten, but they remain in the relegation zone thanks to Norwich beating fellow strugglers Watford.

Howe is desperate to add more signings, especially in defence as he also wants at least one new centre-back, but the threat of relegation is very real and is making it difficult to bring in players, despite the vast riches they can offer.
