The signing of Kieran Trippier is a good start in the transfer window for Newcastle, but they must continue to act fast.
This is the view of Gabby Agbonlahor, who believes their humiliating FA Cup exit at the hands of Cambridge United shows they must recruit another forward in light of Callum Wilson being sidelined for the next two months.
Newcastle were unable to find the net against their League One opponents despite having 23 shots, nine of them on target.
And Wilson’s calf injury means goals could be very tough to come by in their bid to stay in the Premier League.
“This is a worrying time for Newcastle,” Agbonlahor said on GameDay: Your Verdict. “They had 23 shots but no goals against a League One side.
“Callum Wilson is out for two months, that’s eight Premier League games… One win in 28 games for Newcastle, if I’m a Newcastle fan I’m very worried.
“It’s okay bringing in Trippier but he can only provide crosses to players who can put it in the back of the net. 23 shots and no goals just shows they have to replace Callum Wilson.
“They can’t wait for him to come back and have nine or ten games left, they need to get a striker in as soon as possible.”
It’s understood Magpies owners Amanda Staveley and husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi as well as chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan went into the dressing room afterwards to speak to the players and coaching staff.
Manager Eddie Howe saying they left supportive messages that were appreciated by the team, however, Agbonlahor believes the conversation went very, very differently.
He added: “I reckon the owners went in there and said to them ‘sit down, listen carefully, wake up. All the players, the coaching staff, wake up! We’re investing a lot in this football club, we’re going to bring in some new players to give you a hand but you have to wake up.’
“Newcastle should not be losing to Cambridge. They had a very strong side out, they should not be losing that game.
“The Newcastle owners will be saying to them ‘wake up, you need to win your next game.’ Not ‘we’re going to leave it until we sign three or four more players.’
“Their next game is a must-win, the game after that is a must-win.
“Don’t get me wrong, if Newcastle get in the right players, I fancy them to stay up. I really do. For me, Watford are the poorer team and aren’t going to have the funds to put together a team like Newcastle can.”
