Newcastle United are eyeing a bargain move for Wolfsburg’s former Manchester City midfielder Felix Nmecha, according to reports.

The Magpies qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years after finishing fourth in the Premier League and are looking to bolster their squad as they return to Europe.

However, despite their super-rich owners, reports suggest they are looking to spend under £100m amid fears over Financial Fair Play regulations.

The club will make at least one big-money signing, with Leicester City’s James Maddison heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park, but otherwise are looking at cut-price deals.

The Telegraph reports that Nmecha fits the bill on this front, with the Newcastle hoping to spend around £15m on the 22-year-old.

Nmecha came through the youth ranks at City, making two first team appearances for them before being released in 2021.

Wolfsburg snapped up the German-born midfielder, who represented England at youth level but has now been capped by the Germany senior team, and has become a big player for the Bundesliga side, making 30 league appearances this season.

The Daily Mail reported that Newcastle’s transfer budget could be as low as £70m, which would seriously restrict the number of players they will be able to bring in this summer.

Leicester want around £60m for Maddison, which the Magpies are unwilling to pay, but if a deal is done then it won’t be considerably less than that figure.

They have also been linked with Brighton’s Moises Caicedo but the Seagulls are asking for over £70m for the midfielder.

Manchester United’s Scott McTominay and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher have also been touted as possible Newcastle signings during the transfer window.
