Newcastle United have been urged to sign three players in January – including Manchester United outcast Jesse Lingard – with former Magpies midfielder Rob Lee firing a relegation warning to the club’s new owners.

Newcastle won their first game of the season on Saturday with Eddie Howe’s side beating fellow relegation-battlers Burnley 1-0 at St James’ Park.

Despite the win, Newcastle remain second from bottom in the Premier League, three points from safety.

Lee doubts the current Newcastle squad is good enough to avoid relegation to the Championship and has urged his former club to sign three stars in January to help Howe avoid the drop.

Asked to name the players Newcastle should target in the upcoming transfer window, Lee told Coffee Friend: ‘I would say Kieran Trippier, James Tarkowski and Jesse Lingard.

‘Lingard would score goals, it’s what Newcastle need. West Ham are probably desperate to get him back, he was unbelievable for them. He’s got energy, he gets around the pitch and he’ll get on the end of things and score goals.

‘Tarkowski, he’s been in England squads, he’s a good defensive player, strong, quick and a bit of a leader.

‘I’ve always liked Trippier, they’re the players you could get and they’d want to come to Newcastle. That’s important.

‘We don’t want players coming to Newcastle just for the money, but players who want to play for this club and play for these fans. If we get those types of players in, we’ll be okay.’

Lee, who made 381 appearances during his ten-year spell at St James’ Park, added: ‘If Newcastle don’t bring in any reinforcements, we’ll go down.

‘The players have improved since Eddie Howe has come in, but still, if Newcastle don’t get players in, it’s wise enough to know they aren’t good enough [to keep the club up].

‘There’s a reason why Newcastle are where they are. I was at the game on Saturday [against Burnley], Callum Wilson scored the goal, but did we look like scoring any more?

‘We had a couple of chances, but Callum Wilson seems to be the only person scoring. If he gets injured, we’re in serious trouble because no one else is scoring goals.’
