Fans of wicked wagons may be getting some good news, with rumours that the next-generation BMW M5 could come to us as a 735-horsepower plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and with a long roof out back.
That’s according to Car & Driver, which reports that in addition to a sedan expected to launch in 2024, the upcoming M5 could also include a Touring variant that will make its way across the ocean to us here.
The current 5 Series’ offerings in Canada include 48-volt mild-hybrid systems and a PHEV. As the M550i xDrive sedan, it uses a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 that makes 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. At the top is the M5 Competition, which moves up to 617 horsepower and with 553 lb-ft of torque.

The new M5 is expected to carry the same PHEV powertrain as the XM SUV. That model makes a combined gas-electric rating of 644 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, but C&D reports that it will increase to 735 horsepower and 735 lb-ft of torque in the high-performance M version. Rumours are that it will be able to hit some 140 km/h when it’s running solely on its battery charge, and will include rear-wheel steering.
As for that wagon body, it’s reported that Frank van Meel, head of BMW M, hinted that the new M5 could sport that configuration, and said that its U.S. customers and dealers had been asking for one. While virtually all mainstream automakers have ditched wagons in favour of SUVs, Audi and Mercedes-Benz continue to offer them. Those two factors lead us to believe that while rumours are always just rumours until we hear otherwise, we think this one could turn out to be true.
