A look at head-coaching changes throughout the NFL as teams begin to retool for 2023. (This will be updated):
Who’s gone
Nathaniel Hackett, Broncos: Hackett, 43, was fired Dec. 26 in his first season at the helm of the Broncos, following an embarrassing 51-14 blowout loss to the Rams on national television. He finished with a 4-11 record and is just the fifth head coach since 1970 to not finish his first season. Denver will be looking for its fifth head coach since winning Super Bowl 50 in 2016. Jerry Rosburg took over as the team’s interim coach.
Kliff Kingsbury, Cardinals: Kingsbury, 43, was fired Jan. 9 after four seasons with Arizona where he compiled a 28-37-1 record. He led the Cardinals to the playoffs in 2021, earning him a six-year contract extension through 2027. However, Arizona finished with a 4-13 record this past season. General manager Steve Keim was also let go.
Frank Reich, Colts: Reich, 61, was fired Nov. 7 after Indianapolis opened the season with a 3-5-1 record. He had been the head coach since 2018 and amassed a 40-33-1 record in his tenure, including two playoff appearances (2018 and 2020). Jeff Saturday took over as the team’s interim coach.
Matt Rhule, Panthers: Rhule, 47, was fired Oct. 10 after five games into his third season in Carolina. He had an 11-7 record, including a 1-4 start to the 2022 season. Steve Wilks took over as the Panthers’ interim coach.
Lovie Smith, Texans: Smith, 64, was fired Jan. 8 after one season with Houston where the team finished with a 3-13-1 record. It’s the second straight year the team has fired a coach after one year. They parted ways with David Culley after he finished 4-13 in 2021.
