During his first talk show appearance in 14 years, Nicolas Cage denied that he owns a ‘Bat Cave’ and shared the story behind the rumor.

Nicolas Cage has a reputation for spending his money in some rather interesting ways, but despite what you might have heard, the actor insists that he does not own a “Bat Cave.” A veteran of the screen, Cage recently returned to theaters with the premiere of his latest film, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. In the acclaimed movie, Cage plays Nick Cage, a parody version of himself as he channels his most famous action movie roles to rescue his kidnapped family.

To help promote the film’s release, Cage appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, marking his first late night talk show appearance in 14 years. The actor was asked about a claim made by Diane Kruger that he had bought a cave during production of National Treasure. Cage opened up with some details about what really happened, explaining how he had heard that there was a cave for sale, but that he didn’t actually buy the cave and have it converted into a superhero’s secret lair. As Cage explains:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“I had an interest in exploring all the elements, you know? I got my certificate on the Great Barrier Reef. I explored the great element of water. Air? I didn’t really get as far as I wanted to. I wanted to be a hang glider. It didn’t really happen. Fire? I felt like Ghost Rider. I have explored the element of fire. And then I wanted to explore Earth, and I thought, ‘Yeah, I want to start spelunking. I want to start exploring caves.’ I think we were in North Dakota in the black hills when we were shooting one of the Treasure movies. And I said, ‘I hear there’s a cave for sale. Let’s go look at it!’ And I did. And it was beautiful!”

Cage admits that the cave was “beautiful,” and even agrees that he might have said that he’d like to buy the cave, imagining the adventures he could have had within with his then-wife. Ultimately, however, Cage did not purchase the cave.

“All these stalactites. It was all these like milky quartz, like crystaline walls. I thought, you know at the time I was married, and I was like… ‘I’d like to buy this and just go down in the bottom of the cave and get totally naked with my wife and drink my glory. In the bottom of a cave in the earth.’ Needless to say, I didn’t buy the cave. It didn’t happen. And there were no bats, there were no bats in the cave.”
