Nikola Jokić led the Denver Nuggets to an NBA championship Monday night. Nine years ago, he was a draft footnote.
Denver selected Jokić with the 41st pick in 2014. As ESPN’s Malika Andrews noted during an interview with the star center, her network didn’t even show his pick announcement. A Taco Bell commercial aired as a chyron revealed his selection.
Jokić delivered an incredible response to his draft snub.
“They didn’t believe in the fat boy,” he told Andrews. “It seems like it worked out. Don’t bet against the fat boy.”

Jokić didn’t enter the NBA with the typical athlete’s physique. He weighed 255 pounds before the draft but has since turned some baby fat into lean muscle.
He’s also won two MVPs and earned five All-NBA selections. Jokić silenced the few skeptics still questioning his superstardom by posting 30.0 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 9.5 assists during a remarkably dominant postseason.
Betting on Jokić paid off immensely for the Nuggets, but even they passed on him to take Doug McDermott with the No. 10 pick.
