Nissan is recalling roughly 96,000 Rogue and Qashqai compact crossover SUVs in Canada (the latter is branded Rogue Sport in the U.S.) as well as another 713,000 in the U.S. over a potential problem with the ignition keys that may cause the vehicle to shut off while driving. Rogues from model years 2014 through 2020; and Qashqais from model years 2017 through 2022 are covered by the campaign if they have jackknife-style ignition keys.

On affected vehicles, those types of keys might collapse into a folded position while driving, withdrawing the key from the ignition and thus turning off the vehicle; if this happens, it can increase the risk of a crash.

Nissan is advising owners not to attach any accessories to their keys and to keep the keys in their unfolded position until a fix is made. The automaker does not currently have a fix for the issue, per se, but expects to by this summer, at which point dealers will install a spacer into the key slot of the ignition key. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified beginning March 17.
