‘No excuse to break the law’ with one million drivers facing hefty car tax fines

0

New data has found that almost one million British drivers were caught driving an untaxed or uninsured vehicle last year.

As a result, those who avoided paying their vehicle excise duty (VED) were fined a total amount of £208million.

A staggering 3.3 million people have been caught without car tax and fined in the last four years alone.

These kinds of mistakes have returned to pre-pandemic levels, with car tax offences increasing by 93 percent since 2020.

The research, from Wagonex, has found that 4.7 million people have admitted to having used their vehicle without tax in the past.

Currently, motorists who get caught behind the wheel without tax are at risk of fines between £50 and £1,000.

Experts suggest that some drivers are suffering from “admin fatigue”, with drivers forgetting or putting off renewing things like their car tax or insurance.

Toby Kernon, CEO and founder at Wagonex, said: “With almost everything available at the touch of a button these days, it’s concerning to see the number of drivers who continue to ignore the law.

“With over a million Brits caught in the last year alone, it’s clear that drivers aren’t keeping up with their car admin – and whether that’s down to cost or hassle, there’s no excuse to break the law.

“The reality is that while over five million drivers admit this kind of admin is a hassle, these are legal requirements, and those who miss their car tax renewal could be risking fines of up to thousands of pounds in the process.”

Mr Kernon highlighted that many people may have “admin fatigue” when it comes to sorting out MOTs, maintenance and car tax.

Around 23 percent of motorists said they were in favour of systems which would cut down on the paperwork and make it easier for them.

Belfast, Birmingham and Glasgow are the worst-offending areas for the highest number of untaxed vehicles making up 15 percent of those crimes.

The capital of Northern Ireland has by far and away the highest number of people avoiding paying their taxes with 247,341 tax offences since 2019.
