Jennifer Lawrence has a new movie coming out. Great, right? Well, some people certainly don’t think so.
The trailer for the new film, No Hard Feelings, dropped this week and is described as a “coming of age sex comedy” that sees JLaw star as an Uber driver whose car gets impounded so she answers a Craigslist ad from parents seeking someone to date their 19-year-old son Percy before he goes to college.
The trailer sees the “helicopter” parents ask Maddie, Jennifer’s character, to date their son, implying they would like her to have sex with him. During the trailer Maddie describes Percy as a “kid” who is “unf***able” and is shown encouraging him to go skinny dipping with her.
However, after releasing the trailer on Twitter, some users accused the film of promoting grooming.
Grooming is defined as befriending or establishing an emotional connection with a minor under the age of consent with the objective of having sexual relations with said child. While Percy’s character in the film is 19, so over the age of consent in the US which is 18, he is very much portrayed as a “child” in the film.
“It’s grooming,” one Twitter user said, while another added: “I feel like a movie about grooming a 19 year old kid isn’t the feel-good hit it would have been a few years ago.”

“So wtf the movie is about a girl [who] gets punished for cheating on her husband then gets rewarded for basically grooming someone?” another person wrote.
“I’m sure there is probably a moral or greater story to this, I just don’t see this movie doing well. Underage drinking and grooming is not going to go over well in my opinion on this one,” a fourth said.
When some people pushed back against the definition of grooming, claiming that because Percy is 19 he shouldn’t be seen as a child, one user wrote back: “Let’s be for real. The dude is acting like a 14 year old. That’s what makes it look like a grooming situation to me.”
No Hard Feelings is set to be released in the UK on 23 June this summer.
