Ja Morant raised concern with some cryptic Instagram messages earlier Wednesday.
After separate posts directing love to his mother, father, and daughter on his Instagram Stories, Morant captioned a fourth post, “Bye.” According to Tennessee police, the NBA star said he’s “fine” during a wellness check, claiming he’s “taking a break from social media.” Morant later deleted the posts.
Stephen A. Smith said “no one” he contacted had any information on the situation, but they were all worried.
“I called the NBA league office,” Smith said. “They have no idea what was going on. They appeared and sounded a little fearful.”

He also reached out to players who were “uncomfortable.” Some of his ex-teammates were concerned as well.
The Grizzlies suspended Morant without pay on May 14 after a second Instagram Live video surfaced of him brandishing a gun. He missed eight games during the regular season, during which he underwent counseling treatment.
Morant’s suspension is indefinite pending a league investigation. He’s set to begin a five-year, $194 million max contract next season.
