The last time G Flip performed in Perth, just weeks before the pandemic brought travel to a halt in early 2020, they hadn’t heard the name Chrishell Stause.
It’s fair to say a lot can change in three-and-a-half years.
The singer is now married to the American Selling Sunset star — and their new wife may accompany them when they make their long-awaited return to WA next month.
G Flip has been reflecting on the unexpected twists life takes as they gear up for the August 11 release of their sophomore album, Drummer.
Tracks reference the 29-year-old’s whirlwind romance with Stause, moving to Los Angeles and coming out as non-binary — all things G Flip could only have dreamed of when their critically acclaimed debut About Us dropped in 2019.
“This record is way more mature to me,” G Flip says.
“For my first little record, everyone in Australia was getting to know me. I was wearing my colourful T-shirts and shorts and Vans and flat-panel caps.
“All my fans have seen me go through different relationships, from the partner who About Us was written about to now being married to Chrishell. Everyone has kind of grown up with me, and it has been nice to feel that support over the years.”
G Flip’s most heart-warming fan moment came recently in the form of a young boy called Levi, who appeared in a TikTok video explaining the musician’s gender identity to his sister.
The clip, which attracted hundreds of thousands of likes, moved G Flip to tears.
“Although it is my dream of being a drummer-singer and living this cool life where I get to play music every day, a big part of this project is also me wanting to be the role model my younger self never had,” they say.
“If I was the same age as Levi who was in that video, understanding what it is to be non-binary and teaching others — he is only six or seven years old — if I was educated at that age, it would have helped me feel so much calmer and I would have had far less dark thoughts.”
Stause has played a big part in how settled G Flip feels of late.
After meeting at a Halloween party in 2021, the reality TV realtor confirmed they were an item on Selling Sunset the following May, and a year later the couple tied the knot in an impromptu Las Vegas wedding.
“We have been in our honeymoon phase for nearly two years now,” G Flip says.
“We are just a really good pairing. Our lives are quite similar in how busy we are and how our schedules are all over the place. I really feel like I have found my person in Chrishell, she is just so f…… awesome. I can’t wait to bring her down to some Aussie shows.”
And an Australian wedding is on the cards, too.
“That’s definitely going to happen,” G Flip says.
“We plan to get married every year, because we have friends and family all over the place. We are not talking big, expensive weddings; we are talking 10 people or less.”
Fitting in another ceremony could prove challenging, however. When the tour for Drummer is wrapped up, G Flip is keen to try their hand at acting.
“When I was growing up I did a lot of musicals in school and I always thought at some point I would get into acting. I also want to write a musical as well,” they say.
“I have done a few little auditions there but I want to get some coaching and lessons under my belt before I do any more. Even with my career as it stands, you do need to act when you make music videos and are performing. I just want to hone in on those skills and we will see what happens in the future.”
Drummer is out on August 11. G Flip is playing at the Astor Theatre on August 26 (sold out).
