“I really love being able to spend time with myself doing my skin care,” says Normani. “My skin-care routine, and also my hair, are really important moments for me and intimate moments that I share with myself.” Medical-grade products and prescriptions from her dermatologist have been game-changers for her acne-prone skin, but she supplements those with an everyday routine. She begins with a creamy cleanser and 111Skin hydrating mask which she massages in with a face roller—maneuvering in an upward motion according to advice she got from her mother. Next, she applies a pair of iS Clinical serums, one to combat hyperpigmentation and the other for the ultimate glow, followed by a reparative moisturizer and sunscreen.
When it comes to makeup, Normani is partial to a ’90s-esque look inspired by the likes of Nia Long, Toni Braxton, and Mary J. Blige. “My brows are probably my favorite feature,” the 26-year-old notes, especially because they remind her of her father. “I grew up watching my mom do her hair and makeup, and I wanted to be just like her so I think that that’s where that fascination and love for makeup and hair comes from,” she says as she color-corrects. “My mommy and my daddy are my everything. They’re my purpose—my why.” After grooming her brows into place with an Anastasia Beverly Hills brow pen and wax, she creates a subtle smokey eye with liquid liner and a Fenty Beauty palette, then moves into concealer and contour.
“I definitely feel like because my parents instilled in me the things that make me unique and the fact that I don’t have to look like everyone else—it really encouraged me,” Normani continues. Now, she wants to encourage and uplift the younger generation of little girls in all that she does—whether it’s making a fashion statement or leaning into vibrant makeup. For foundation, she mixes two shades of Dior’s Backstage formula, offering a tip: “Only use the foundation in the areas you haven’t contoured yet.” Her complexion is set with a MAC powder and rusty orange blush. A coat of mascara to her bottom lashes, a dot of liquid liner to unveil her beauty mark, and Sol de Janeiro’s shimmering body oil provide the finishing touches.
But what truly ties it all together? The perfect ’90s lip, created with an ombre-effect liner and matte lipstick by Rokael Beauty, then Dior’s buzzy Lip Glow Oil which she also blends on her eyelids. With a hair flip, Normani reveals her final look. “I feel cute,” she muses. “I’m about to go find somebody’s hot son.”
