I don’t know much about North and South Dakota, those are two states that I haven’t crossed off the old bucket list in my 22 years of life.
However, I have to imagine that there is at least something of a rivalry between the two. I’m sure they argue and South Dakotans say “we have Mount Rushmore” and North Dakotans say “yeah but we have… something” (I don’t know what’s in North Dakota). But I do know that they have the North Dakota State Bison.
Those Bison just took down South Dakota in the quarterfinals of the Summit League tournament. Now, they have a chance to complete the South Dakota sweep against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in the semifinals. South Dakota beat Omaha, 63-55 to get to this matchup and they’re the favorites to advance.

The last time that these two teams played was back on Feb. 4 when South Dakota State won 90-85. That split the season series, so this is the rubber match and for ultimate Dakota bragging rights. In that Jackrabbits win, North Dakota State played better in almost every facet of the game.
The Bison shot better from the floor, 59.6% to 53.2%, they made the same number of 3s, eight, they rebounded better, 32-36, but they turned the ball over 10 times to just two from the Jackrabbits. That was the difference in the game
South Dakota State has a reliable guard in Zeke Mayo who averages 18.2 points a game, 6.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and importantly a steal.
The Jackrabbits only turn the ball over 11.7 times a game which is seventh in the Summit League and behind North Dakota State, but they force 11.9, which is second in the conference. North Dakota State only forces 8.9 which is far and away the lowest.
I expect South Dakota State to turn over North Dakota State which is a guard heavy team without a true leader in the backcourt like Mayo. Grant Nelson is a nice 6-foot-11 scoring forward, but I don’t trust teams led by big men in March very often. South Dakota State also shoots 79.3% from the free throw line which is third in the country and will be a big factor in tournament play when it is win or go home.
Sorry North Dakotans. I didn’t know anything that’s in your state and now I’m picking against you in the Summit League tournament. The good news is I don’t think I’m visiting anytime soon.
