The 2023 Formula 1 course started in March, in Bahrain and he did it in the best possible way for Fernando Alonso, that has become the protagonist of this new season of Formula One. The Asturian had not been on a podium since November 21, 2021 when he also finished third in the Qatar Grand Prix. In this start of the season he already has three. However, the pilot warns that he still has a long way to go and opens up about his “real” options with Aston Martin.
The Asturian underlines that he is surprised that Aston Martin has been so competitive in the short time he has been with the teambut warned that those of Silverstone must put their batteries and develop their car at the same pace as their rivals.
Alonso joined Aston Martin from Alpine for the 2023 season, and his arrival coincided with a big improvement in his new team. An authentic catharsis that has led the green team to rub shoulders with the best on the grid. Having finished 2022 just seventh in the Constructor’s Championship, Aston Martin he is currently second in the 2023 standings, with Alonso finishing third in the three races held so far. A situation that the Asturian pilot describes as simply “incredible”.
“I was hoping that 23 would be a season of learning, and in 24, perhaps, we would be in a position to challenge the Ferraris and Mercedes,” Alonso declared to RacingNews365.com.
“However,” he adds, “against all odds, we challenged them in Bahrain, in the first race. So obviously now everything looks very optimistic.”
Alonso lowers the soufflé
An optimism that the pilot hopes will not serve to relax the team to which he issues a clear warning: “Now we have to comply. We will see very soon, from Baku, Imola, Barcelona, as the [otros] Teams will start to bring improvements to their cars, and we must also be a leading team in that sense, on the track, but also off the track.”
In that sense, The Asturian was already in favor days ago of not throwing the bells on the fly and warn the green team ahead. The driver warns that now comes a crucial part of the season in which improvements will begin to be seen in the cars and it will be necessary to see who is capable of making the difference with a faster car. The AMR23 has become the big surprise at the start of the season in Formula-1, thanks to the work of the engineers -despite the blow caused by the ban on its rear wing- but Alonso wants more. “We need to learn and grow as a team, also maybe off-road now because we are racing against Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari, teams that are used to this kind of pace of development,” he told Car & Driver.
In the British team they have already started to do so and announce improvements in the next races. “We will have some new parts in Baku, Imola, Montreal and some in Silverstone, but we will bring each small increment as soon as it is ready instead of waiting to lump everything together in big packages. It’s an approach that worked well for us last year,” says Krack on the Aston Martin website. Straight-line speed has been a drag in the first three Grands Prix this year, so Aston Martin plans to introduce a new rear wing at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with the aim of improving the AMR23’s aerodynamic efficiency. Some improvements that do not make Alonso take his feet off the ground, despite the euphoria generated around the 33rd victory and even the world title: “We need to learn a lot of things throughout this season to be a serious rival at 24, hopefully“.
