This is part of a government proposal to regulate and monitor the resale of vehicles, a senior official told ET.
Online and offline intermediaries will also need to register with state transport departments, according to the proposed regulations. “It will be mandatory for all used car or bike dealers to notify authorities about any vehicles they intend to resell…A used vehicle dealer will also have to register their organisation with the state transport department,” the official said.
The move is aimed at protecting consumers, the official added.
A licence will be issued to the reseller which can be revoked if a dealership is found to be violating the rules. Penal provisions will also be put in place, the official said.
Currently, there are no regulations governing the resale of passenger or commercial vehicles. These rules aim to ensure transparency and protect the rights of both buyers and sellers of used vehicles.
It also comes in the backdrop of complaints about such sales from both buyers and sellers.
