Nuno Tavares’ Arsenal career looks over after training ‘dismissal’

Nuno Tavares’ Arsenal future looked bleak after he was shipped out to Marseille on loan as Mikel Arteta moulded his Premier League title-challenging squad. But worrying developments from his stint in France may all but confirm he won’t have a place at the Emirates Stadium beyond this summer.

Tavares has been an important player for Marseille this season, making 33 appearances, but he has divided opinion among fans.

The 23-year-old left-back has showcased a goalscoring touch throughout the campaign, especially in the early stages.

However, his poor decision-making and lack of defensive awareness have garnered strong criticism, leaving doubt over whether he is of the quality Arsenal need.

And fresh reports about his attitude will be another cause for concern after Marseille boss Igor Tudor revealed that one of his players was sent for an early shower after ‘not making necessary efforts’ in training.

In an interview with L’Equipe, Tudor said: “In my football, there is a feature. You have to run. And if you don’t…

“If I see one player that doesn’t run in training, I’ll say it once, twice and then on the third time of asking, I’ll intervene.

“During the hour or so of training, I am demanding, and the players have understood it. But if they want rest days, I can give them some too. And we can joke or laugh, but work is work.”

L’Equipe then claimed that Tavares was the name that Tudor was pointing at, which won’t do his chances of re-entering Arteta’s plans any favours.

The Spanish coach recruited Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City last summer, making him his first-choice left-back.

And with Kieran Tierney also in his ranks, there is little room for Tavares, although he is still just 23.

Arteta has proven in the past that he will provide little opportunity for players who don’t show the appropriate attitude, making examples out of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

He could view the Portuguese star as a potentially sellable asset ahead of upgrading his squad again as Arsenal gear up to return to the Champions League.
