Two Bay Area destinations are included in the New York Times’ list of 52 places to go in 2022.

The signature travel feature this year focuses on places around the world “where visitors can be part of the solution to problems like overtourism and climate change.”

The two California destinations are:

The Great Highway in San Francisco, the thoroughfare that — while closed to vehicle traffic at the start of the pandemic — “became a destination, a beachfront promenade,” the Times said. As of August 2021, it reopened to vehicles during most of the week but is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists from noon Fridays to 6 a.m. Mondays and all day on many holidays.

Santa Cruz County, particularly Big Basin and Henry Cowell state parks and other redwood forests that survived the wildfires of 2020.

California was the only state that had more than one place on the list. The other U.S. destinations are:

  • Hoonah, Alaska
  • Saguaro National Park, Arizona
  • Estes Park, Colorado
  • Sarasota, Florida
  • Humboldt, Kansas
  • Little Calumet River, Chicago, Illinois
  • Cobscook Shores, Maine
  • Queens, New York
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Bronzeville, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The Times’ 2021 list had one California destination, Santa Rosa.
