Oakland’s Jack London Square expects 7 new restaurants in 2022, 2023

Jack London Square management has announced that the Oakland waterfront will welcome seven new restaurants, including Oakland-born Timeless Coffee & Bakery and the French-inspired Left Bank Brasserie, in 2022 and 2023.

The district known for bobbing boats and seabird calls has been riddled with restaurant delays and closures, even before the pandemic. Assembly, the 40,000-square-foot food hall at 55 Webster St., has yet to break ground despite an expected summer 2020 opening. Several tenants, including Preeti Mistry and Matt Horn, have pulled out of that project.

The short-lived Dyafa closed before the pandemic in 2019, followed by Indepedent Brewing Co. in 2020. The meat company and restaurant Belcampo shuttered its doors in November 2021 after a highly-publicized sourcing scandal. Last year, Miette, the French patisserie, was forced out of the space it had occupied since 2009 due to a rent re-negotiation loophole with Jack London Square landlord, CIM group. Vegan sushi restaurant Salvage Hausu shuttered in February 2022.

Heath McCue, director of retail marketing for Jack London Square, cited the pandemic and the proliferation of take-out for the closures, but declined to comment on the status of the food hall.

“Jack London Square is a destination dining environment where ‘take-out only’ didn’t necessarily work,” McCue said. “Today, in the aftermath of the pandemic, dining and entertainment is on the upswing. Therefore, our leasing and marketing efforts this year have focused on those categories.”

To that end, Timeless Coffee & Bakery has moved into the 2,655-square-foot former Miette space and will start offering vegan pastries and a wide assortment of coffees beginning this week at 85 Webster St.

Waterfront Cafe, located on Broadway at the Waterfront Hotel, also opens its doors this week, serving a seafood-centric menu of oysters, shrimp cocktail, tuna tostada and sandwiches, such as cold Maine lobster on brioche.

Here are the other five restaurants and their projected openings:

Noka Ramen: Located next to Forge Pizza at 90 Franklin St., this ramen shop is known for its bowls of rainbow-colored noodles that get their bright colors from natural ingredients including butterfly pea flower and dragon fruit. Look for  cocktails, sake, beer and wine and a rainforest-themed dining room. Opening: 2022. https://nokaramen.com/

Left Bank Brasserie: This Parisian-style brasserie, which is part of a small Bay Area chain, has a seasonally-changing menu of classic French cuisine, from escargot and tomato tarts to fondue, moules frites and troute almondine. Look for wine, cocktails, beer and indulgent desserts. The 6,946-square- feet space at 55 Webster St. will also have a terrace for alfresco dining. Opening: 2022. www.leftbank.com

Mia: This contemporary taqueria at 439 Water St. will offer a variety of Mexican food, from breakfast burritos with Latin coffee to chilaquiles, chile rellenos, cochinita pibil and ceviche. Expect a full-service tequila and mezcal bar as well as counter service and takeout. Opening: 2022.
