There are bike trails, hiking trails, even beer and wine trails. But Oakland might be the only city in the country to have a trail for vegan food.
No, they didn’t build the trail then add the restaurants. It’s a marketing effort by Visit Oakland, of course. But the new Vegan Food Trail does shine a light — and make a point — that Oakland has a wealth of chefs, caterers and other food makers who are passionate and innovative when it comes to plant-based eats.

There’s vegan soul food (Souley Vegan), vegan organic doughnuts (Donut Farm), vegan taquerias (Taqueria La Venganza) with housemade “carnitas” and vegan pizza (Bare Knuckle Pizza), plus Vegan burger joints (Malibu’s Burgers) making their own patties and ice cream joints (Curbside Creamery) swirling cashew-based cherry almond ice cream.
There are 20 restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and creameries in all, stretching from Millennium in Rockridge to Two Mamma’s Vegan Kitchen in the Fruitvale district.
You can download a map of the eateries at www.visitoakland.com. Just remember to check with the business (or its social media) before heading out. Hours may vary with limited service.
