Massachusetts workers face many hazards on the job, and one of those is exposure to the coronavirus, which is tracked by the Department of Public Health. Much of the occupation data on positive cases is missing because such information is not routinely captured in a standard way. The data is typically found through case investigations which are done to inform people of exposures and ask about their close contacts.
The state has captured the occupation of more than 41,000 positive coronavirus cases from July 2020 to November 2021. See the top five below:
- Students: 9,107 cases
- Unemployed: 5,078 cases
- Child/minor/infant: 4,591 cases
- Retired: 4,466
- Office worker: 1,370 cases
Other miscellaneous professions:
- Nurse: 984 cases
- Daycare worker: 983 cases
- Construction worker: 624 cases
- Food service, including grocery store workers: 322 cases
- Commercial sex worker: Less than 25 cases
