Both the teams made out of their group stages despite facing stiff competition and the fact that they have interim coaches for the season-ending tournament. Odisha, under Clifford Miranda, have been undefeated in the season as they won against Hyderabad FC (2-1) and Aizawl FC (3-0) after drawing East Bengal 1-1.
Floyd Pinto’s NorthEast United recovered from a 2-4 defeat to Chennaiyin FC in the opening group game to win their next two games to qualify for the semifinals. The perennial ISL underachievers crucially defeated Mumbai City 2-1 followed by a big 6-3 win over Churchill Brothers.
As far as head-to-head is concerned, this is the ninth time Odisha and NorthEast United will face off with the former leading the head-to head 5-2. Odisha also won the last two games between the outfit earlier this season in the ISL.
Diego Mauricio is the major attacking threat for the Kalinga Warriors as he was the face behind Odisha’s success in the group stages when it comes to scoring or setting up goals. He has been in splendid form the entire season as he won the ISL Golden Boot as well last month to take Odisha into play-offs. His partner in crime has been Victor Rodriguez as the duo enjoy a telepathic understanding in the attacking third.
For NorthEast United, Colombian striker Jordan Wilmar Gil, who joined the club in January, has been the star with six goals in the group stages. Four of those goals came against Churchill Brothers in the goal fest. Forward Jithin MS has been crucial too for the side with back-to-back goals in his last two matches.
