Okay, Can Someone Please Explain That Wild ‘You’ Season 4 Ending?

[There are major spoilers ahead for You season 4 part 2. If you haven’t finished the season yet, proceed with caution!]

Oh, so you’ve already binged the entirety of You season 4 part 2 even though it’s been out for literally one day and you’re coming here to try to figure out what the heck you just watched? I get it! Thankfully, you’re among friends, and we’re here to discuss the wild, wild twist at the end of this season, because truly WHO saw that coming? Here’s your official explanation of what the heck went down.

Okay, so Joe was the killer all along?

Yes. I hate to tell you this, but your crush on Joe is still not safe. You don’t get a pass because he seemingly killed less people this season, because it turns out that’s not true! It’s revealed the viewers that Rhys, who audiences had previously thought was the Eat the Rich Killer, had actually never met Joe. The Rhys Joe was talking to was a figment of his imagination.

“There’s this thing where you get to see Joe from another person’s eyes which we’ve never really seen before,” Penn Badgley told Entertainment Weekly. “And you realize this whole thing is almost this romanticized version of him. Maybe. And then you also have Rhys, which is a fun way to make literal the metaphor of the inner child or the ego.”

The guilt of all his crimes seems to catch up with him, and he jumps off a bridge, attempting suicide. He survives, which brings us to…

So what about the Kate situation?

Joe killed Kate’s dad (he knew way too many of Joe’s secrets), and surprisingly, Joe comes clean to Kate about his past. She, shockingly, doesn’t care! So they start over in New York City. One thing about Joe, he loves a fresh start. They go on a little PR tour to reframe the narrative around Joe so that he can live in NYC under his Joe Goldberg name.

Okay, more questions. What happened to Marienne?

She escaped! Nadia, the student of Joe’s who caught onto this whole scheme, helped her fake her own death and escape. That’s a true friend, right there.

This is making me dizzy. So where did Nadia end up?

Unfortunately, she got the short end of the stick (right behind all the dead people, that is). Joe framed her for killing her own friend, and she ended up in jail. That feels like it’ll come back to bite Joe eventually, but we’ll see.
