Rudy Gay is gone shortly after joining the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Per Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, the Thunder released the 36-year-old forward on Wednesday. OKC acquired Gay, TyTy Washington, Usman Garuba, and a second-round pick from the Atlanta Hawks for Patty Mills earlier this month.

Gay has played for five teams in 17 seasons, most recently playing 52 games off the Utah Jazz’s bench in 2022-23. He averaged a career-low 5.2 points per game, a far cry from his 15.8 career norm.
As the influence of analytics rose within the NBA, Gay became a Rorschach test of sorts. At his best, the high-volume scorer relied on the mid-range game with an inefficient three-point shot.
The Thunder faced a roster crunch to stay under the offseason 21-man limit, and Gay likely never factored into their plans.
A young squad led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander exceeded expectations by going 40-42 last season. They could take another step with Chet Holmgren making his NBA debut.
