Srinagar Police clarified that the viral video is half a decade old and is not related to the Asia Cup 2022.
Pakistan beat India by five wickets in their Super 4 game of the Asia Cup 2022. Soon after Pakistan’s victory, a video showing firecrackers in the sky is widely circulating on social media as the people of Srinagar celebrate Pakistan’s victory against India in the Asia Cup 2022.
Sudarshan News and Sagar Kumar from Sudarshan News on Twitter first shared this video with the claim that Srinagar celebrated India’s defeat in front of Pakistan,by bursting firecrackers. However, they later deleted their tweets. You can view them here and here.
The caption of the post states, “Fireworks broke out in Srinagar on the victory of Pakistan #IndvsPak.”
Fact Check-
We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on the same. The results led us to the same video posted on Facebook on 14 August 2020. According to the caption of this post, this video shows firecrackers on Pakistan’s Independence Day in Downtown, Srinagar. The location of the video is Nawakadal chowk in Srinagar. This makes it clear that the viral video is not a recent one and does not show people from Srinagar celebrating Pakistan’s victory against India in the Asia Cup 2022.
As ‘Sudarshan News’ journalist Sagar Kumar tweeted the video with the claim that the video shows recent visuals from Srinagar after Pakistan’s victory against India in the Asia Cup 2022, Srinagar Police replied to this tweet and clarified that the video does not show celebrations after Pakistan won against India in the Asia Cup 2022. They also mentioned that the viral video is old.
Followed by this tweet, Srinagar Police issued another tweet and mentioned that the video is half a decade old from Nawakadal chowk.
They wrote, “The video is half a decade old from Nawakadal chowk. Don’t spread fake news and sensationalism by circulating old videos. Nothing of this sort reported from anywhere”.
With a keyword search, we found that in 2017 after Pakistan won against India in the ICC Champions Trophy, people from Kashmir celebrated Pakistan’s victory. You can view relevant reports here and here.
Conclusion-
Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. The video does not show people from Srinagar celebrating Pakistan’s victory against India in the Asia Cup 2022. Srinagar Police clarified that the viral video is half a decade old. The video could be traced back to 2020 from Nawakadal chowk in Srinagar.
