Stellantis is recalling more than 33,000 older, diesel-equipped Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs in Canada because a faulty part could lead to the vehicles stalling while driving. Specifically, model-year-2014 through -2019 Ram 1500 Classic pickup trucks; and -2014 through -2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs are covered by the campaign if they came equipped with 3.0-liter diesel engines. Gas-powered versions of these vehicles, or vehicles equipped with the newer third-generation 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6, are not impacted.

On affected vehicles – some 33,632 examples are covered by the recall campaign in Canada, along with 80,629 in the U.S. – a faulty tone wheel, a part that helps to synchronize several moving engine parts, could lead to sudden stalling while driving.
“An FCA investigation discovered the tone wheel in a small percentage of engines may, over time, lose magnetic material,” Jeep and Ram parent Stellantis said in a statement. “Should this occur, it may disrupt signal transmission to a sensor that monitors crankshaft position — a condition that could facilitate an engine stall.”
The automakers are aware of 600 reports of vehicles stalling, says Consumer Reports, but the defect has not been linked to any collisions or injuries so far. The recall, which is an expansion of an older August 2020 Stellantis campaign for a similar issue, recommends owners of affected vehicles bring their Ram or Jeep into a dealer for a free software update “that allows the crankshaft position sensor to operate even if the tone wheel fails,” reports CR.
