Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained what he told Manchester United players as he left Carrington for the final time on Sunday morning. Solskjaer’s position as United boss became untenable after their disastrous 4-1 defeat to Watford.
An emergency board meeting was held in the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s defeat.
A decision was made to part ways with Solskjaer that night, with the formalities of Solskjaer’s severance package being finalised.
His departure was confirmed early Sunday morning as the Norwegian head coach headed to Carrington to say his final goodbyes.
Solskjaer was spotted meeting with some fans outside the training ground, where he said it “had been an honour to be manager”.
But the 48-year-old also spent some time having one final chat with the United players before leaving.
Speaking in one final interview, Solskjaer admitted that he hopes to see a reaction from the United squad.
“As I’ve said to them this morning as well, trust yourselves, you know we’re better than this,” he told MUTV.
“We’ve not been able to show it but go out, chest out, enjoy being a Man United player, Champions League, the biggest stage.”
Michael Carrick will now take over on an interim basis with a tough start to life in the dugout.
United return to action on Tuesday with a crunch game against Villarreal before travelling to Stamford Bridge next weekend.
United can ill-afford to drop points against Villarreal with Group F tight at the top with two games remaining.
But Solskjaer has all the faith that Carrick can lead United through a difficult period.
