The history-making athlete was featured in the magazine in 2010, ’16 and ’19.
Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn has been breaking barriers for decades. The 82-time World Cup race winner has three Olympic medals and made history earlier this year as the first woman to ski the legendary Streif in Kitzbühel, Austria, and the first person to ever complete the course at night.
Vonn, who is a New York Times best-selling author, has made three SI Swimsuit magazine appearances. She made her debut in Whistler, Canada, in 2010 and returned in ’16 to be part of a body painting photo shoot in Petit St. Vincent with photographer Frederic Pinet and artist Joanne Gair.
Her most recent SI Swimsuit feature was in 2019 in Mexico, the same year she retired from professional skiing.
“I was actually pretty nervous for my first SI Swimsuit Issue,” she admits. “I wasn’t entirely confident with how I looked at the time. I think being featured in the magazine made me look at myself in a different, more positive light.”
For Women’s History Month, the 38-year-old reflected on her successful and inspiring career. We also caught up with Vonn to chat about her previous SI Swimsuit photo shoots.
“In some ways, it boosted my confidence and made me feel that having a strong and athletic body was not just O.K. but something to be proud of and celebrated,” she adds. “Each issue I was in, I was more and more confident, and it’s amazing to see that transformation in the pictures and in myself.”
Here’s a look back at some of our favorite photos from Vonn’s SI Swimsuit features over the years.
