Omicron variant forces Grammy Awards postponement

History repeats itself this year as the 2022 Grammy Awards are being pushed back, this time due to the ongoing rise in cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. Like last year’s ceremony, also slated to be hosted by Trevor Noah, 2022’s award show will be postponed as COVID-19 numbers continue to spike. The Recording Academy and CBS delivered a joint statement announcing the award ceremony’s postponement,

After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community and our many partners, the Recording Academy® and CBS have postponed the 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards® Show. The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience, and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority. Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on January 31 simply contains too many risks. We look forward to celebrating Music’s Biggest Night® on a future date, which will be announced soon.

Originally slated for January 31 at the newly renamed Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, the ceremony’s new date has yet to be announced. At the end of last year, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Bonobo, Tiësto, Major Lazer, ILLENIUM, Black Coffee, and Mura Masa received nominations in the various dance/electronic categories for this year’s show, while Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, H.E.R., and Billie Eilish all secured multiple nominations for 2022 as well.
