But June 17 some two decades back had a significant moment in the footballing world. It was a groundbreaking day exactly 20 years ago when Manchester United announced they had accepted a £25 million bid from Real Madrid for David Beckham.
Beckham, the unequivocal superstar of football back in those days used to be a Red Devil but his status swiftly changed to a Galactico on this very day.
Starting in United’s academy, Beckham went on to make 394 appearances for the team, lifting six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the 1999 Champions League in a hugely successful era for the club.
He helped United win the Premier League title in 2003 but his future had been under intense speculation, with plenty of sides interested in signing the midfielder.
Initially, it looked like Barcelona would be the preferred option, and Beckham had been the central figure in Joan Laporta’s successful campaign to become president of the Catalan club. Despite the Blaugranas’ growing interest and admiration, Beckham had the last say.
The then England captain decided to join Barcelona’s arch-rivals Real Madrid instead and completed a massive transfer to the Spanish capital.
The official statement from Manchester United wrote, “Manchester United today reached agreement for the transfer of David Beckham to Real Madrid for a fee of 35 million euros (approximately £25m).
“The deal is expected to be completed in July, conditional upon approval by the boards of Manchester United and Real Madrid, and on the provision of satisfactory payment guarantees.”
Beckham spent four seasons in the La Liga, where he had an underwhelming time. In those four seasons, Beckham played 155 times for Los Blancos and managed 20 goals. The midfielder ended his Real stint in style though by winning the La Liga title in the 2006-07 season.
Afterwards, the England icon donned the shirts of LA Galaxy, AC Milan and finally PSG where he eventually retired in 2013, calling time on a playing career spanning over two decades.
The former England international also had 115 appearances for the Three Lions, where he netted 17 goals for them.
