SAN JOSE – One person was in custody Wednesday following reports of an armed person at San Jose State’s Martin Luther King Jr. Library, according to the university.
At 10:10 a.m., a library custodian was checking the first floor women’s restroom when he spotted a person in a stall with what he thought was a pistol, according to Capt. Michael Santos of the San Jose State University Police Department. The custodian left the restroom and flagged down a library security officer, who called police.
Officers arrived at the scene within minutes and evacuated the library, Santos said.
With the aid of a robot from the San Jose Police Department, officers determined the female suspect had crawled into a space above the restroom, according to Santos.
The suspect initially refused to come down, Santos said, adding that officers found a replica firearm inside the restroom while she was still in the crawlspace. She later came down and was safely taken into custody.
Charges are pending against the suspect, who is not affiliated with SJSU, Santos said.
The situation involving reports of an armed individual in @sjsulibrary has been peacefully resolved. Individual is in police custody.
Additional information regarding library reopening will be shared soon. Thank you to @SJSUPOLICE and @SanJosePD for their timely response. #SJSU
