A beach in Italy has made it into the top ten ranking for 2023, according to Tripadvisor.
The travel site releases an annual list of the world’s best beaches as part of the Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards.
These are derived from millions of reviews submitted by travelers across the globe throughout the preceding year.
Tripadvisor takes into account the quantity and quality of the ratings to generate its yearly ranking.
So which beach in Italy is one of the world’s best? And what other beaches in Europe made it into the top ten?
Head to Lampedusa for one of the best beaches in the world
The Italian beach that came in 8th in Tripadvisor’s top ten is located on the island of Lampedusa.
Spiaggia dei Conigli is “one of the marvels of the world,” according to one user of the travel site. The beach, lying on the island’s southern coastline, is a white crescent of sand backed by untamed cliffs hugging a bay of pale cobalt water.
“Prepare for a 20-minute walk to get to the beach,” the Tripadvisor reviewer writes, “but once you are there you feel like you’re not on Earth.”
The beach has often received accolades for its beauty, so it gets overcrowded in summer prompting authorities to introduce a booking system.
Visit Portugal’s Algarve for golden sand and terracotta cliffs
Praia da Falésia, located near Albufeira in Portugal, comes in 6th in the Tripadvisor ranking of the best beaches in the world.
The endless stretch of sand is famed for its “gorgeous red sand cliffs,” as one review writes, that “lead to the green-blue ocean.”
The beach extends more than 8 kilometers from Olhos de Água in the west to Vilamoura in the east.
Atop the orange clay cliffs runs a nature reserve which has thankfully prevented the construction of unsightly hotels along the coastline.
Iceland’s black beach is the best in Europe
Coming in 4th in the world rankings – and consequently the top beach in Europe – is Iceland’s Reynisfjara Beach in Vik.
The coastline is renowned for its dramatic black sand. One Tripadvisor user says, “[We] felt like we were trapped inside a dream. This place makes you forget time.”
The beach, on the south coast of Iceland, is famed for the sheer basalt stacks that rise up from the crashing Atlantic waves.
If you’re lucky enough to time your visit with the Northern Lights, the shoreline becomes a surreal, unearthly vision.
