Officers saw a vehicle with what appeared to be altered licence plates near Hamilton Road and Adelaide Street Wednesday, police said. The zero on each of the vehicle’s two licence plates was altered to look like an eight, a police spokesperson said.

The driver refused to stop and police used a spike belt to deflate the vehicle’s tires a short distance away. The motorist fled on foot, but officers gave chase and arrested him, police said.

Investigators found the vehicle had been reported stolen in London Dec. 27 and the driver’s licence was suspended, police said.

A London man, 43, faces eight criminal and Highway Traffic Act charges, including failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, resisting arrest, driving while suspended, using an altered plate and possessing property over $5,000 obtained by crime. He’s to appear in court April 7.
