Peel police are clamping down on speeders near a dangerous intersection in the Malton area of Mississauga after a pedestrian was recently struck and killed in a motor vehicle collision.
The 50-km/h zone at Derry Road East near Cattrick Street (labeled in the below Tweet as Cattrick Drive) is apparently a popular place for ill-advised motorists to put the pedal down, because Division 12 of the Peel Regional Police busted three drivers travelling at excessive speeds over a 48-hour period earlier this week. Speedometer readings posted to social media registered the vehicles travelling at 137, 126, and 125 km/h.

At those speeds, the five-0’s lights and sirens would’ve been followed by the ‘beep beep’ of a reversing tow truck coming to take the vehicles away for their mandatory 14-day impound stay. Anything 40 km/h or more over a speed limit of 80 km/h or lower is now considered stunt driving in Ontario, and comes with a 14-day roadside impound, a 30-day licence suspension, and as of this spring a mandatory “driver improvement course” to be completed within 60 days of being convicted or your licence will be cancelled.
But far greater than the risk of losing your car and legal permission to drive if you speed like that is the risk of hurting yourself or somebody else. “Derry Road, near Cattrick Drive in Malton is a posted 50km/h zone,” the Tweet reads. “It is also the location of a recent motor vehicle collision that resulted in a pedestrian fatality. #slowdown.”
On May 19, a woman was taken to hospital in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle near Derry Rd. and Edwards Blvd.
