The original Denver location where the Quiznos sandwich chain was born is now in the hands of the city for unpaid taxes.
On Monday afternoon, several cars sat in the parking lot of the sandwich shop at 1275 Grant St., but the entrance was locked, with a sign in the window declaring a tax seizure.
Documents addressed to Dominik Mendoza of Hobbs, N.M., were taped to the door in early April, estimating a total of more than $12,000 due for unpaid sales tax, according to the Department of Finance’s Treasury Division. The due date is set for May 4, the notice of final determination reports.
Another notice puts the amount of unpaid occupational privilege tax at almost $1,000, with the same due date.
Fox31 first reported the closure Monday morning.
Mendoza didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. His LinkedIn profile identifies him as the owner of Quiznos franchises in New Mexico and Colorado.
For now, Denver’s manager of finance is in possession of the store.
This isn’t the first hurdle that the Grant Street location – or the brand itself – has faced in recent years.
In 2020, a spokesperson for the Capitol Hill restaurant called the economics around operations “unsustainable,” with the building listed for lease. Two years earlier, private investment firm High Bluff Capital Partners bought the Quiznos chain, and still boasts it as part of its portfolio – alongside Taco Del Mar and Church’s Chicken.
In 2014, Quiznos grappled with bankruptcy, but emerged by cutting its debt by more than $400 million.
At the corner of 13th Avenue and Grant Street, a sign still declares the location as its first since 1981. But a handwritten note in the window reads, “Closed until further notice,” with an apology.
That leaves the sole Quiznos open within the city as the location at 4640 N. Pecos St. The chain’s other restaurants in Denver are listed as temporarily closed on Google, including the ones at 3535 Quebec St. and at 4505 Peoria St.
At the front window, Prime Management taped up a poster marketing the Grant Street space as available. Spokesperson Blake Kahlich declined to comment for the story, as did property representatives on the scene around 2 p.m. Monday.
Enforcement officer Beverly Gallegos didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Quiznos corporate office is at 4700 S. Syracuse St. in Denver, according to its website.
