Orli La Jolla
Orli La Jolla, San Diego’s chicest new hideaway, opens its doors today.
Founded by siblings and La Jolla natives Hailey and Max Waitt, the unique hospitality concept marries the best qualities of a posh hotel and convenient homestay. “Orli was our solution to everything we felt could be better when it came to the perfect stay,” comments Max. “Guests will get the effortlessness of a homestay while also having the comfort and amenities of a traditional luxury hotel, with offerings such as self-check in, tech-based concierge services, and a full fleet of complimentary amenities.”

While the siblings could have picked any neighborhood in San Diego, staying close to where they grew up was key. Max says, “San Diego is an incredible city, but La Jolla is a destination unto itself: a charming, seaside village filled with natural beauty and considered one of the top beach destinations in the world.”
No wonder the building that Orli occupies – a stunning historic 1913 residence designed by Irving Gill, a prominent architect and pioneer of California modernism – also has deep roots in La Jolla. “We wanted our first hotel to be a rehabilated building, not a ground up project – something with great bones and energy, and a boutique feel. When we walked into 7753 Draper Avenue, we instantly felt that we had found the one,” explains Hailey of the storied structure.

To honor the building’s legacy, Hailey and Max painstakingly restored many of the original details while incorporating luxe touches nodding to Modernism and Art Deco style to make the common spaces and 13 guest rooms and suites feel tasteful and timeless. The dazzling Irving Gill Penthouse Suite, for example, sports a rich, dark palette, sleek black stone countertops, and a private patio with soul-soothing views of the ocean. Hailey says, “Sitting here outside at sunrise or sunset is such a serene moment that’s hard to beat.”

The common areas, too, are equally impressive. One of the siblings’ favorite spots is the brew bar. “Adorned with green marble and brass, it’s where guests can help themselves to a variety of on-tap beverages such as nitro cold brew or kombucha,” comments Hailey. There’s also a scenic and spacious courtyard – guests can unwind here in the cool shade of olive trees – and a handsome, well-stocked library for reading, working, or simply quieting your mind.

Whether you’re curled up with a book in the sophisticated lounge or exploring La Jolla on a complimentary beach cruiser, Orli covers all the bases in fresh, and sometimes, unexpected ways. As Max puts it: “We’re offering the discerning traveler a new way to stay, by combining unfettered independence, meaningful experiences, and exceptional design so you can create memorable moments that will last for years to come.”
