On his first trip to the last eight at the Crucible, the Bullet made the perfect start, knocking in a break of 93 in the opening frame in a matter of minutes.
The Rocket responded with two half-centuries to level up but Brecel looked to be playing beautifully and made a 68 to go back in front.
Things went quite horribly wrong from there on in, though, and the defending champion won the next five frames as Brecel’s early form evaporated.
The world number one made a top break of 128 and three more half-centuries as he built an early lead, but one that it is already difficult to see the Belgian recovering from in a race to 13 frames.
