Our dream £20k wedding in Ibiza was thrown into chaos after major luggage blunder

A SCOTTISH couple have been left devasted as they face cancelling their £20,000 wedding in Spain after a luggage blunder.

Wesley Hampson, 30, and his wife-to-be Claire Milroy, 29, couldn’t wait to jet off to Ibiza with 30 loved ones to tie the knot.

But they had the worst possible start to their trip of a lifetime after a blunder at Edinburgh Airport caused their luggage not to arrive in the Spanish city.

The wedding party flew out on Sunday on a Ryanair flight, but after a luggage mix-up at the airport, their bags were not loaded onto the plane before it took off.

It meant that when guests arrived in Ibiza they were left with no change of clothes and Wesley’s 21-year-old brother didn’t have his diabetes medication.

The couple were left distraught as the biggest day of their lives began to go up in smoke as soon as they arrived.

The groom’s dad, Mark Hampson, 57, threw all his efforts into finding a solution for the big day after his daughter-in-law was left in tears.

He claimed that the issues started when their flight was delayed by half an hour in Edinburgh, but they didn’t realise there was a problem until they waited at the baggage hall in the Spanish airport and saw no luggage coming out.

The large group were forced to wait in a 120-person-long queue before they found out that their bags had been lost and were given a form to fill out.

But it meant that they were two hours late to their hotel – arriving at 10pm with no belongings or toiletries with no shops open to buy anything.

After managing to get some clothes at tourist shops that were open late in Ibiza Old Town, the group headed back to the hotel – but they couldn’t relax as they didn’t know if the wedding was going to happen.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Mark said: “We had to cancel a boat trip my son had booked for everyone on the first full day and we had a special meal planned for the evening but it was too late when we arrived and no one felt like celebrating.”

The concerned dad tried contacting Edinburgh Airport and Ryanair the next morning but never managed to speak to anyone.

It wasn’t until he spoke to a fellow passenger who had an AirTag in their case that the group discovered the luggage was still at Edinburgh Airport and could track its location.

Mark added that a woman from Ibiza Airport informed them their bags were being flown over from Stansted and would hopefully arrive in Ibiza in time for the wedding.

But until they all get their cases, they were unsure if the celebration would go ahead – meaning they faced being £20,000 out of pocket.

Mark added: “If we delay the wedding it will cost £1,000 to push it to later in the week, but if we have to cancel it will cost around £20,000.

“Claire is absolutely distraught and has been in tears, all she saw was her dream wedding falling apart right in front of her.

“We have all been planning it for over a year, my son Wes has been getting really angry but is trying to stay calm and make sure Claire is okay.

“She was so upset about the fact all her family and friends had travelled all this way for this to happen. They are both just worried the £20,000 wedding won’t go ahead.

“At this stage, we just don’t know what will happen – we are just hanging on and hoping for the best.”

Both Ryanair and Swissport told Edinburgh Live that it was a “baggage belt failure” that caused the cases to go missing.

But officials at Edinburgh Airport disputed the claims and said a shortage of ground handling staff caused the problem.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Airport told the Scottish Sun: “There were no baggage belt failures at Edinburgh Airport on that day and we don’t recognise any claims which suggest there were.

“Our own investigation shows the handling agent responsible for that flight was short in staff numbers and had a lack of trailer equipment to store and transport baggage, impacting on delivery of bags to the aircraft.

“This is an issue within the agent’s operation, not the system.”

A spokesperson for Ryanair said: “Due to a baggage belt failure at Edinburgh Airport some passengers’ luggage was not loaded onto this flight from Edinburgh to Ibiza (16 July).

“Affected passengers were notified and advised that their luggage would be sent on the next flight to Ibiza, which arrived yesterday (18 July).

“We sincerely apologise to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused as a result of this baggage belt failure at Edinburgh Airport, which was entirely beyond Ryanair’s control.”

A spokesperson for Swissport said: “We’re sorry for the impact this has had on these passengers.

“We are further investigating what went wrong here but can confirm that the bags have been sent onwards to Ibiza to be reunited with the passengers”.
