In the season four finale, Young Ian had volunteered to join the tribe in exchange for Roger MacKenzie’s (Richard Rankin) freedom and he wasn’t seen until the eighth episode of season five.
While fans were glad to see his return they couldn’t help but notice his jaw-dropping transformation as well as the fact he had become severely depressed.
Viewers have yet to find out what happened to him, as he had only returned to help Jamie regain power at the Ridge, but thankfully the truth will be uncovered in the next season.
The actor confirmed: “There is a lot of mystique about Ian’s life away from the Ridge and if you haven’t read the books and don’t know what is happening, season six certainly delves into Ian’s character more so I have a lot to play with.”
Outlander season 6 will premiere on Starzplay on Sunday, March 6.
