Trailing multiple awards including two Tonys and a Pulitzer, Michael R. Jackson’s meta-musical finally arrives in London from the US.
It is the tale of a theatre usher whose dreams of writing a musical are hampered by the fact that he is “fat, Black and queer.”
Advised to write what he knows, he starts penning a musical about a fat Black queer theatre usher attempting to write a musical about a “fBqtu” as his six “Inner Thoughts” alternately harass and encourage him.
While references to American Black culture may have some meaning for the ‘In’ crowd it will get little traction in a real audience.
Graphic detail of gay sexual practices and jokey scenes involving the Church of AIDS may be considered by some to be inventive and daringly original but the enterprise has the stench of incestuous theatrical complacency.
Oversexed, overpraised and over here.
