PARIS, FRANCE – SEPTEMBER 13: The unveiling of the Olympic rings on the esplanade of Trocadero in … [+]
After a controversial start to Olympic ticket sales, Paris organizers are preparing for the second round with promises that things will go smoother.
To purchase tickets in the first round, people registered on the official Paris Olympics website. A lottery system was then used to select people who were given time slots to purchase a pack of tickets for 6 events.
About 3 million tickets are allotted to this first round. However, many users reported having trouble accessing the site or being surprised by the actual cost.
Tony Estanguet, president of the Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, told radio station RTL that there were some issues, but overall the process has worked well except for times when more people than expected tried to go online.
Even as the first round continues, fans can register now for the 2nd round of purchases which allows people to buy tickets to single events. Prices for the events range from €24 to €72, though about half will be €50 or less.
During the second phase, another 7 million tickets will go on sale. There are an estimated 10 million total tickets across all events.
This second phase will include tickets for some of the most popular events, including the finals of the 100 meters track event, the 100 meters swimming freestyle, and most of the team sports tournaments. It will also include tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games.
The second round of sales will start May 11. Winners will be notified by e-mail and will have forty-eight hours to make their purchases. Anyone can buy a maximum of 30 tickets across the two phases.
For those whose names are not selected in either round, unsold tickets are expected to go on sale in October.
The Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games are scheduled to be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
