Red is ideal for Christmas outfits and we do love our neutrals… but it’s the parma violet and purple fashion trend that’s giving us a fashion fix during the dark days of winter. Since Bottega Veneta green exploded onto the catwalk – and subsequently the high street – it’s clear we’re open to being way more adventurous with our cheery colour choices.
Unexpected colour clashes were everywhere this summer and Net-a-porter.com saw a whopping 96% rise in purchases of granny smith green products this year. Right now our our favourite Instagram fashion inspirations have picked violet as their colour of choice. We are here for the shade that manages to look kitsch, cute, sexy and bold all at once.
When a colour comes into fashion, rather than a shoulder shape or skirt length, it’s far more freeing. If you want to get in on the trend, you can pick whatever works for you. Whether that’s a smart city-proof coat (we spotted an epic one on @marianne_theodorsen), cosy knit or a sparkly dress… You can dip into the purple patch as much – or as little – as you want. Start small and try a belt, pair of socks or a purse – or go full on Prince with trouser suit, like Nicole Ocran.
Violet looks amazing against neon highlighter shades that really make it pop (@slipintostyle has nailed it) – but it also looks sweet with other pastel pieces. Lemon, lime and pink are ideal companions from the softer spectrum. If you are more attached to darker shades, try a violet blouse or cardigan worn with chocolate brown cords or an espresso toned mini-skirt.
You could also work a full violet look with a dress and cosy knitted cardigan from Marks & Spencer in the same shade or complimentary violet jumper (this Loewe one has a flash of other colours) and skirt (River Island’s tweed version is major). Wearing one colour head to toe is a stylish hack for looking instantly pulled together – Meghan Markle is a fan of so-called ‘solo saturation’. But however you style it, make it (ultra) violet.
