Passenger fury as mum with kid ‘expects her to give up seat’ after paying extra

The passenger took to the social media platform Reddit to share her frustration over a mum and her kid sitting next to her on her flight back home.

The traveller explained that she “paid extra for a window seat” because she got “a little claustrophobic” on a previous flight when she was in the middle seat.

However, when she boarded the plane, she found “a lady and her child” in her seat, so she kindly asked them to move.

She explained: “The lady is in the middle and the child (maybe three or four?) is in my seat. I didn’t board late – I was one of the early groups, so she just preemptively took the window. You have to pay extra for that.

“I walked up and very politely tell her it was my seat. I never, not once, raised my voice or lost my temper.”

The other woman was reportedly very annoyed and said: “Are you serious?” and added she was being “such a b***”.

She claimed that the other passenger was so angry that she then refused to sit next to her and asked the flight attendant to be moved somewhere else.

The woman explained: “The poor flight attendant comes over and gives me an embarrassed look, and tells her she needs to sit down in the correct seat and wait to see if there are no-shows.”

She claimed: “The woman then proceeds to tell everyone around what a b*** I am, etc, earning more embarrassed looks from other passengers.

“At the end of the day, I got my seat, wasn’t claustrophobic, but what is the deal with parents like that? I have three boys and I would never, ever expect people to give up seats for us. Certainly, not ones they paid extra for.”

The woman asked for advice on the forum and the post was inundated with comments from other mums who supported her decision not to give up her seat.

One opined: “They’re hoping that you’ll ‘think of the children’ and just give up your window seat so that the little darling can be entertained by something other than mum. Good for you for sticking up for yourself. If more of us did this, perhaps those people would stop being so entitled.”

Another one said: “I’m a mum too, and I would never have thought of demanding my kid’s preferred seat.

“The only time I asked someone if it was ok to switch seats was when my son, then six, was seated across the aisle from me. I offered my aisle seat to the guy squished in the middle seat. He gladly switched.”
