‘Pathetic’: Expat in Spain ‘upset’ by ‘terrible state’ of property – ‘Disgusting’

Since Brexit, British expats without Spanish residency can visit Spain for 90 out of every 180 days. Some Britons have a holiday home that they use for regular Spanish holidays.

Outside of peak season, Spanish resorts are often quieter and some holiday complexes aren’t used much during winter.

One person posted on the Vilamartin forum that they were “upset” by the “terrible state” of their property this January.

A poster using the name ‘movistar’ said: “Been over for the new year, as always I had a great time.

“The thing that has upset me is the terrible state of the pool, completely unkept, not cleaned, all kinds of ugly stuff floating about in it.

“To cap it all, someone is letting a big dog crap all over the white limestones just before entering the pool area!

“The big question is, is it going to be sorted out before the season starts?

“The next one, why has this been allowed to happen? With the ongoing dog mess there is clearly a present danger to all who use the communal pool, especially children.”

Many expats own homes within holiday complexes which have shared facilities such as swimming pools and gyms.

Often a nominated community president oversees general business and deals with any issues.

One commenter replied: “You may want to contact the president of the community to ask about the pool cleaning schedule during the winter months and to ask to see the accounts so you can see the cost of keeping it clean and sparkly for several months while not being used.

“Since Covid it appears that some owners may have hit financial difficulties during the pandemic and fees may not be being paid and therefore something has to give.

“As for the dog mess and as the owner of two dogs myself, I am appalled at the attitude of some other owners but this is something else you could bring to the attention of the president.”

Another user said: “Our pool is cleaned regularly through the winter months even when not in use and looks lovely.

“Freezing cold but lovely. As for the dog mess, see if you can find out who’s dog it is so you can name names, it is disgusting behaviour.

“I would make my voice heard if that was the state of my pool/garden area.”

British expats in Spain need to have residency or a visa to stay in Spain for longer than 90 days out of every 180.

Some of the top Spanish destinations for British expats are located in the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol regions.

Both areas have established expat communities.
