Patrick Vieira and Roy Keane slammed Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior for his role in Brighton’s opening goal in Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium.
Manchester City are on the brink of winning the Premier League for a fifth time since 2018 after title rivals Arsenal slipped up again, this time against Brighton.
Man City thumped Everton 3-0 earlier in the day and Arsenal were unable to respond as they slipped four points behind with two games remaining.
Pep Guardiola’s side, boasting a game in hand and far superior goal difference, now need just three points from their final three games to clinch the title.
It was a hugely disappointing outcome for Arsenal, especially as for 50 minutes at the Emirates the game was in the balance.
But Julio Enciso’s close-range header put Brighton in front and they went on to secure an emphatic 3-0 win thanks to late goals from Deniz Undav and Pervis Estupinan.
Premier League legends Vieira and Keane were both disappointed by Kiwior’s contribution to Brighton’s opener as the Poland defender stayed on the floor following a minor collision, giving Enciso a free header.
Former Manchester United captain Keane told Sky Sports: ‘A big, strong centre-half staying down like that… really?’
Asked if Kiwior could have stayed on his fit and tried to defend the attack, Keane replied: ‘Of course he could.
‘You’re talking about putting your body on the line, it’s last-ditch stuff, you don’t stay down like that just because your boot comes off. His foot didn’t come off! His boot did.’
Arsenal legend Vieira added: ‘You expect your centre-back to be strong enough to stay on his feet and defend the ball first.’
