The Belgium international is enjoying another fine campaign for City as Pep Guardiola’s side edge closer to a fourth title in five years.
League leaders City go into their final game of the season against Aston Villa with a one-point lead over second-placed Liverpool, who play Wolves on Sunday.
De Bruyne has helped push his team towards the title, registering 15 goals and seven assists, with four of those goals coming in a 5-1 victory away at Wolves.
Joining the 30-year-old on the shortlist for the award this season are Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarrod Bowen, Joao Cancelo, Bukayo Saka, Mohamed Salah, Heung-min Son and James Ward-Prowse.
Liverpool’s Salah and Tottenham’s Son are battling for the Golden Boot, with the former leading the latter by just one goal heading into the final day of the season.
But Merson thinks De Bruyne should be named Player of the Season ahead of his rivals.
‘As for the Premier League Player of the Season award, I think Kevin de Bruyne would be my pick as he makes a world-class team like Manchester City tick,’ Merson told Sportskeeda.
‘Salah had a great start and it’s probably a bit harsh on him, but hasn’t really set the world alight since the turn of the year.’
Meanwhile, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand doesn’t think Arsenal’s Saka should be on the Player of the Season shortlist.
‘I wouldn’t have had Saka in there yet, as well as he’s done,’ Ferdinand told Vibe with Five.
‘I wouldn’t have had him over [Cristiano] Ronaldo, no, not this season.
‘Ronaldo should be in ahead of three of four of those guys in there.’
