Paul Merson believes Arsenal can still qualify for the Champions League if they sign Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin in Janaury.

The Gunners were four points adrift of fourth place heading into Saturday’s game against Southampton having suffered three defeats in their last four games.

Arsenal’s need for attacking reinforcements was clear, even before news of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s disciplinary breach broke ahead of kick-off against the Saints.

The 32-year-old had gone six games without a goal and was left out of the matchday squad as Mikel Arteta’s side attempted to get back on track, minus the services of their captain.

Arteta was forced to deny a rift had developed with his star strike during his pre-match press conference on Friday, but regardless of their relationship Merson believes his old club should make a ‘massive’ bid for Calvert-Lewin in January.

The England international has hardly featured for Everton this season due to a groin injury but is closing in on a return to fitness and Merson believes the 24-year-old might be attainable despite Arsenal’s current malaise.

‘Arsenal need to go out and buy Calvert-Lewin and put in a massive bid for him,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘They need a focal point up front who is good and strong.

‘It’s the Arsenal. Where would he go? He can’t stay at Everton. Are they bigger Arsenal? Tell me a reason they are bigger club than Arsenal?

‘Arsenal are going to finish above them, if Calvert-Lewin goes there they could get in the top four, surely? He holds the ball up.’
