Paul Pierce is a serious victim of some recency bias.
During a recent podcast appearance on KG Certified, Pierce told his former Celtics teammate that Caleb Martin is better than Tyler Herro. He suggested that bringing Herro back during this Finals series would throw off Martin’s rhythm.
“If I’m Miami, how do you even play [Herro]? They got rhythm going,” Pierce said. “Herro being hurt might’ve been a blessing in disguise for them because we see what Caleb Martin turned into. Caleb Martin is better than Herro.”
"Caleb Martin is better than Herro….you throw him off by bringing Herro back" – Paul Pierce@paulpierce34 says bringing Tyler Herro back throws off Miami's rhythm, especially Caleb Martin. Y'all think Miami needs Herro to beat the Nuggets? https://t.co/2DvSiCZLiU pic.twitter.com/Z17R0RLCjt

Pierce is taking some serious heat for this controversial opinion.
“No way Paul pierce said Caleb Martin is better than herro,” one fan wrote.
“Paul Pierce is still an idiot,” another said.
“They need to bring Herro back, and Caleb Martin definitely isn’t better,” another added.
They’re not going to beat them with him or w/o him https://t.co/6RVaiJxVMP

Herro averaged 20.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game before suffering a broken hand injury in the Heat’s playoff-opening Game 1 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. He’s been out since then, but is expected to be available at some point during this championship series.
Martin had an incredible series against the Celtics, averaging 19.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. But in last night’s Game 1 loss in Denver, he recorded just three points on 14.3% shooting from the field.
Given the Heat’s 1-0 hole and a lackluster offensive performance in Game 1, they could certainly use an influx in scoring from Herro as soon as possible.
