Paul Scholes has explained just how important Casemiro will be for Manchester United after the midfielder made his debut in Saturday’s 1-0 victory against Southampton.
The Brazil international was signed from Real Madrid in a bid to bolster Erik ten Hag’s options in the middle of the park.
Although he didn’t start the match at St Mary’s Casemiro came on for his debut on the 80-minute mark, replacing Anthony Elanga.
The 30-year-old slotted straight in at the base of midfield – the position where he enjoyed so much success for Madrid.
Legendary former Red Devils midfielder Scholes is no doubt over the ‘invaluable’ role Casemiro will play for the club.
‘I think Scott [McTominay] is better going forward, he’s been asked to play in that role as a holding midfield player, I don’t think he’s that good at it,’ Scholes told BT Sport
‘I don’t think Fred’s good at it either. I think they’re both better when they’re going forward.
‘With Casemiro, having that player who plays the position brilliantly behind you or next to you is invaluable.
‘I had Michael Carrick, Roy Keane.
‘It gives you freedom, I don’t even think about defending because I know the man who’s next to me or behind is in the right place all the time. It’s an insurance policy.’
Bruno Fernandes’ fine strike in the second half at St Mary’s was enough to secure all three points for Ten Hag’s side as they made it two wins from two.
Next up for the Red Devils in the Premier League is a clash away at Leicester City on Thursday night.
